The 2018 Toyota AFL Sir Doug Nicholls Round is a celebration of indigenous culture and the significant impact that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander players have made to our great game. The round is celebrated under the name of Sir Doug Nicholls, a former South Australian Governor and AFL player, as well as being the first Aboriginal to be knighted.
Speaking earlier this year, the general manager of the AFL’s inclusion and social policy, Tanya Hosch, said “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders continue be proudly represented in large numbers in our game – even though Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians make up about three per cent of the population in Australia, they make up close to 10 per cent of players in the AFL – and there is a long history of Aboriginal people excelling on the football field.”
As an organisation, the AFL says its committed to investing in and providing programs and support to indigenous communities across the nation. The AFL has dedicated an entire Indigenous Round since 2007, renamed in 2016 to honour Sir Doug Nicholls. The AFL does a fantastic job throughout the round of acknowledging and celebrating indigenous culture, and providing the connection between AFL fans and indigenous culture.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders have played a significant role in building this game, with about 10% of AFL lists this season made up of indigenous players in the male league, as well as 5% of the female competition.
With tickets available at Ticketmaster, this round will be the Western Bulldogs taking on a top four Melbourne side at Etihad Stadium on Saturday at 1:45pm.
Also on the Saturday will be Hawthorn taking on Port Adelaide down in Tasmania at UTAS Stadium. The top of the ladder West Coast Eagles return to Optus Stadium on Saturday night as they take on St Kilda at 6:10pm.
Serious contenders North Melbourne will head to Etihad Stadium on Sunday, taking on the Brisbane Lions with a 1:10pm bounce.
